Exploring the blogosphere

According to wikipedia the blogoshpere is "...the collective term encompassing all weblogs or blogs as a community or social network. Many weblogs are densely interconnected; bloggers read others' blogs, link to them, reference them in their own writing, and post comments on each others' blogs. Because of this, the interconnected blogs have grown their own culture."

Here's a short, recent report on the blogosphere

Purpose: To search the Internet for blogs that interest you in order to become aware of how large and varied the blogosphere is and to get ideas for your own blogs. To start analyzing some of the characteristics of blogs as a genre.
Task: Search for blogs that might interest you by going toTechnorati and searching for a word, e.g. “politics”, in blog posts, in tags or in their blog directory (please choose blogs in English).Read some of the blogs. Choose one that interests you. Come back to our course blog and write a comment to this post about one of the blogs you have found. Give us the url and explain what you like about the blog and why you would recommend others visiting it.
Start considering how blogs are written and how links are used in blogs. What kind of language is used (formal, informal, vulgar, elegant)? How do bloggers make use of links in their posts? At the end of your post, write a few sentences about your initial observations of the styles used on the blogoshpere.
N.B. Be concise ;-)
Respond: Read the comments of the other students and go visit at least one of the blogs they have suggested.
Deadline: Tomorrow :-)

This is the political blog of CNN. It has a clear and simple design. Posts are written in a formal language but comments could be written in an informal language. I recommend this blog because I like how it is presented and organized and because is more imparzial than other blogs.

  2. Www.huffingtonpost.com

after skimming minor blogs regarding politics, I decided to look for the best ones. According to Technorati top 100, the Huffington Post is in position 8. It is a professional blog, with hundreds of authors and it is considered trustworthy and objective. It uses a formal and technical jargon, trying to be as objective as possible. Minor blogs, on the other hand, can use a more informal language and they can express the point of view of the blogger in an explicit way.
Despite these differences, all blogs tend to use many pictures, catchy titles to attract the reader attention. Links allow the reader to know more about a topic mentioned or, more often, to read a previous post about that subject.
What is interesting about the Huffington Post is that the blog is available in different languages, and by lifting from Italian to English, or from USA to UK, the priority of news changes, too.

  3. I indicate this blog because I find it very interesting; for this reason I recommend you to visit this page. This is one of the political blogs of the well-known "The New York Times" and, obviously, it is focused on the next United States presidential election. This blog is written in a formal language, it is presented in a journalistic way and, also for that, the reader can read different perspectives on the same topic. This blog has many links to other sites, even if most of them are links to "The New York Times" stories; these bloggers use some links in order to inform readers about the news they comment upon.

Many blogs have an informal language and they contain biased judgments, personal and questionable opinions. Many blogs are made as a pastime and sometime it's easy to understand the author's purpose.

  4. http://www.theblaze.com/

Technorati gives The Blaze position 4 in his top 100 blogs. It is an information and opinion blog that posts stories, articles, comments about several interesting topics (politics, business, entertainment, culture, technologies, sports…).
In his main page the blog uses photos and titles to catch our attention, then articles are available in other page, if we choose to “read more” or to comment it.
Language is quite formal and journalistic; articles often quote press releases, interviews, or other articles that comes from other blogs or newspapers online.
I find very interesting that there are a lot of links to watch videos related to the posts.

Technorati assigns to this blog position 32 in its top 100 list of the leading blogs. is a blog that deals with the American policy and if you are interested in the elections that are going to play I recommend you visit. The blog has a simple design without too many images and using a formal language.

  6. http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/

This blog, Danger Room By Wired, is one of the most interesting source about American National Security. Here you can find news about war weapons, international conflicts and security politics and, at the same time, hilarious videos about dancing robots. Using an informal but refined language, Danger Room gives you a global view about topics that sometimes are not considered by the medias, it has a simple layout and many pictures. In particular, I really appreciated today's article 'Narquitectura' by Robert Beckhusen , about Mexican's gansters' houses. I recommend this blog for people looking for non-conventional journalism, and unusual approach to globally relevant issues.

  7. http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/

I found this blog very interesting. It focuses on foreign policy, with up-to-the-minute analysis of the top international stories. “Passport” (this is the name of the blog) is made by the editors of the FP Foreign Policy commenting some parts of articles. It is updated daily, and it starts analysing some paragraphs from international and domestic sources and giving “food for thought” and the possibility to comment every post. There are also links to the articles that are used by the authors. The language is quite simple, and I think it is also very handy to consult (comparing with other blogs).

  8. Making a search on Technocrati website I have been impressed by the blog www.theblaze.com, one of the top 100. The title of the blog immediately intrigued me and the images chosen to present the different topics are not trivial and catch my attention. The blog writers use an original form, focusing the article on less known issues and giving alternative and interesting information’s. In my opinion this blog should be visited because it’s organized in a direct and clear way and it’s style is innovative. The language is journalistic, quite formal but not too elaborated.

  9. www.theblaze.com
Me too, I find totally clear - efficient and complete THE BLAZE’S BLOG. According to Technorati Top 100 Blogs, THE BLAZE’s BLOG occupies the position n.22. This is not only a political blog, based on the current US policy, or the foreign and social policy, but it also deals with BUSINESS, CULTURE and TECHNOLOGY as well, describing through breaking news and stories a wide range of topics. The most important information is at the top represented by a simple picture to catch readers’ attention. The main page contains photos with small titles, videos with navigation links which allow you to read an entire article or listen to the radio and watching some videos posted by other blogs, online media, video producers, writers and journalists. I recommend you to visit it because it is very interesting, updated daily, typically written in chronological order and fitting for everyone because the language is structured not in a formal or complex way with technical and elaborated words, but on the contrary it tends to be quite simple and very clear showing personal opinions, topics and critical commentaries. Links and Tags provide more information to users making the site easily adaptable and accessible.
