Placements, cover letters ...

I've seen from a lot of your comments about the Future of Political and Social Sciences that one of the main issues you have is that of internships and career opportunities, with which you feel that the university does not help you a great deal. At the beginning of the course some of you had also asked me to do a lesson on writing good cover letters to support your applications for jobs. So this week, as well as discussing education we will also look at cover letters and brainstorm on what kind of support you would find useful.

University of Kent has an excellent university website providing advice for graduates on writing cvs, cover letters, online application forms.
iHipo This is a useful website with links to international internships and jobs, and also advice on cv and coverletter writing
Wikihow has advice on How to write a letter of Intent
Eurodesk is one of the sites recommended by the You (th)in Motion group blog, amongst the many useful resources they have found for you all.

Here are some internships which I have recently seen advertised
ILO internships
ECAS - European Citizen Action Service

Imagine you are writing a cover letter to apply for the following internship at the Coalition for the International Criminal Court.

I am looking for an internship in a social field, possibly starting from January . I am writing to you because I am really interested in international relations. I have a strong interest in human rights and I know that the aim of ICC is to avoid that violations of human rights last unpunished.
I become interested in human rights and crime against humanity after a Placement at “Lifeline Options, CIC”, which is a no-profit organisation in Birmingham working with refugees and asylum seekers. My assignments were to receive asylum seekers, enter their details in the database and to assist my supervisor to find out the legal procedure suitable for each different case. Working with that organisation I have had the opportunity to know many stories of persecution and violations of human rights, like sexual violence and abuse through children. That experience had a great impact on my awareness and I understood that my studies in Political Sciences could help me to be more sensitive to those issues and to act in the society to obtain some changes.
I graduated in July 2012 obtaining a score of 110/110 with Laudem in “Scienze Politiche, studi internazionali ed europeri” at the University of Padova and now I am attending the Master degree in “Scienze Politiche, politica internazionale e diplomazia” at the same University. During my studies I have acquired a good knowledge of international processes, international law, history and basic economical process. During my Placement I learned how to work in a team with an independent mind and I get skilled in refugee international law. I have good computing skills; moreover having worked on the databases in which the details of asylum seekers were insert, I gained good written and organisational skills. Since the Placement was in Birmingham, I have improved my English and my ability to live in a foreign country, in touch with people from different countries and cultures.
I would be most grateful if you could consider me for the Internship. I will be available for an Interview at any time. I am at my home address in Padova. Please find enclosed my CV where you can find additional information.

    Yours faithfully,
    Susanna Gallini.

I am looking for a placement within your organization, possibly during the summertime (from July to September). I consulted your Internship Application Manual, where I found the application procedures and selections. I am really interested in learning more about human rights enforcement, the role of NGOs in the development of international criminal law, and the field of international relations in general. Browsing in your web site I notice very formative internships: I consider particularly appealing the legal research projects, languages projects and administrative assistance.

My attention on issues about violations and protection of human rights around the world began years ago, when I enrolled in University. My studies were focuses on subject such as International Law, Human Rights, International Relations, and International protection of human rights. Last July, I obtained the Bachelor’s Degree in “Political Sciences, International Relation, Human Rights” at the University of Padua, with the result of 110/100 with honours. I presented a thesis about “The situation of human rights in Myanmar and the initiatives of International Law”. I know how, thanks to my previous studies, the International Criminal Court operates and which are their possibilities to a future development, as I also participated to a conference with an ICC judge.

During my MA courses , together with some classmates, I open a blog where the main interest was the situation of human rights in South Eastern Asia. I used to work in group, and I find it very motivating. I consider the possibility of doing an internship at you, as an excellent opportunity to develop my skills, and to apply what I have studied until now.

I have no problems in working with people of other cultures and languages. I own certificates of French and Spanish. My level of English is quite good, and I also know a little of Russian. In February I am going to start an Erasmus experience in Switzerland, at the Faculty of International Law in Neuchatel.

I will be available for an interview when you prefer. Please find enclosed my CV where you can find further information about my education and work experience.

    Yours faithfully
